Governors for Schools exists to improve educational standards so that children and young people have the chance to realise their full potential. We believe the key to improving school performance is effective governance. By finding, nurturing and supporting a committed network of governors we help to drive systematic change in how schools operate.
Governors are responsible for overseeing the management side of a school: strategy, policy, budgeting and staffing. They enable their school to run as effectively as possible, working alongside senior leaders and supporting teachers to provide excellent education to children.
The governors are the school’s accountable body and as such they:
- provide a strategic view of the school by establishing a vision and setting the purpose and aims of the school within an agreed policy framework. They appoint and performance manage the headteacher, agreeing the school improvement strategy which includes setting statutory targets with supporting budgets and staffing structures;
- monitor and evaluate the work of the school by reviewing the performance of the headteacher, the effectiveness of the policy framework, progress towards targets, and the effectiveness of the school improvement strategy;
- respond to school improvement service and Ofsted reports as necessary. In addition they hold the headteacher to account for the performance of the school and ensure that parents are involved, consulted and informed as appropriate, with information to the community being made available as required.
